Sunrise over the Tegernseer Hütte

1 December 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Tegernseer Hütte is dramatically nestled between the peaks of Roßstein (1,697 m) and Buchstein (1,702 m), perched directly above a vertical rock face. While the Buchstein can only be reached with some light climbing, the summit of the Roßstein is an easy walk of just a few minutes. The panorama is immense – stretching from the Bavarian Alpine Foreland and the Isarwinkel across the Wetterstein, Karwendel and Rofan ranges, all the way to the Main Chain of the Alps. Read more

Border experience on the Blauberge

30 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

A few kilometres south of Lake Tegern lie the Blauberge, whose east-west ridge line marks a border not only geographically but also politically – specifically, the one between Germany and Austria. Read more

A November Grey Sea of Fog

24 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Munich, the Bavarian Alpine foothills, and many valley floors lie beneath a heavy, dark blanket of fog. Vast areas of the mountain forests remain trapped in a diffuse, colour-draining grey, while many peaks rise into the winter sun, their snow caps gleaming against the blue sky – as seen, for example, on the Jochberg above Walchensee and Kochelsee.

Sunrise over Lake Königssee

2 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

After a perfect autumn day in Berchtesgaden National Park with the morning boat trip across Lake Königssee, the impressive panoramas at St. Bartholomä, the climb through the colourful autumn forest and the peaceful evening atmosphere at Lake Funtensee, I head up the short path through the still dark mountain forest to the Feldkogel the next morning to experience the sunrise panorama with the Stuhljoch, Hagengebirge, Watzmann massif, Lake Königssee and the Steinernes Meer. Evening Mood at Funtensee

2 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

After the ascent from Königssee through the Schrainbach Valley and the Saugasse, which was in shadow for a long time, I reach the warming autumn sun again at Ofenloch and look back at the Watzmann. Shortly after, I stand at the Kärlingerhaus with Lake Funtensee below it, its dark waters reflecting the snow-capped peaks of Stuhljoch, Funteseetauern, Grießkogel, and Stuhlgrabenkogel. Although Lake Funtensee in Berchtesgaden National Park is considered one of Germany’s coldest places and exhibits interesting meteorological phenomena with layers of cold and warm air, on this late October day, the Föhn wind ensures pleasant temperatures, even throughout the night. Through the autumn forest at Lake Königssee

2 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

From the mouth of the Eisbach at Lake Königssee, the hiking trail to the Kärlingerhaus winds in steep hairpins through the vibrant autumn forest – the view is beautiful and reminds me of 1970s photo wallpaper. The scenery feels almost Southern Alpine and is comparable to previous hikes in Ticino in autumn. The rhythm of the ascent and the impressions of the landscape create a euphoric high in me; it is a perfect day in nature. Read more

Kaunerwand and Saletalm at Königssee

1 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Just a few minutes’ walk after arriving by boat at St. Bartholomä, I’m already enjoying the calming effect of the magnificent mountain scenery around Königssee. From the mouth of the Eisbach into the lake – I recommend this short walk to every visitor – I look east towards Obersee and the Saletalm, which lie in the shadow of the mountains in winter, no longer receive direct sunlight, and essentially turn into a freezer. That’s why the Salet stop is not served by boats in winter. Read more
