A Past Shrouded in Darkness

14. January 2026/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

A woman in a white summer dress photographing on the steps of the Feldherrnhalle in front of the Army Memorial sculpture, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

A young woman in a white dress, taking a photograph on the steps in front of Munich’s Feldherrnhalle – a selfie, perhaps, or a picture of the Theatine Church? She symbolizes innocence, peace, openness, and progress against the dark backdrop of nationalism, war, and death, embodied by the figure of a warrior at the Bavarian Army Memorial. Read more

Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore)

4. November 2025/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

Collage of the bell tower, baptistery, main portal, and dome of Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore) in warm sunlight, Tuscany, Italy

For my series of sacred “Multiperspective” collages, I really wanted to photograph Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence – it is historically and in terms of architectural history related to the shots from Lucca, Siena and Pisa. At the beginning of November 2025, I had time, and the weather was forecast to offer plenty of sunshine, with autumnal temperatures still between 10 degrees at night and up to 20 degrees during the day. Even if you can’t comfortably sit on the outdoor terraces of bars and restaurants in the evening, the temperatures are quite pleasant for extended tours of the city. My last stay 15 years ago was in 36-degree summer heat – unbearable during the day. Read more

Hofbräuhaus Munich – a very special tavern

25. October 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

This autumn, I took part in an expedition deep into the Bavarian heartlands, its culture, and its identity: to the Hofbräuhaus Munich. Well-equipped – with curiosity, humour, and a thirst – I took part in a guided tour of the Hofbräuhaus. I was, so to speak, a tourist in my own city. Since the tour goes through all the rooms, I was able to get a comprehensive picture of the place and the stories of what is probably Bavaria’s most internationally famous tavern. Read more

Rainy day on Antiparos

30. September 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

A woman walks with an umbrella through an alley in the old town of Antiparos, Cyclades, Greece

The climate in September on the Cycladic islands usually promises plenty of sun with pleasant temperatures, still good for swimming. A rainy day is rather unlikely, though not unrealistic. So the rainy weather during the trip to the island of Antiparos was an unusual and varied experience. Photographically, however, the grey sky, the colourful rainwear and reflecting puddles offered no less attractive motifs. Read more

A tour of the New Palace Oberschleißheim

31. August 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Collage of the Baroque interiors in Unterschleißheim Palace, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

It wasn’t until friends visited that I finally took a tour of the Baroque New Palace Oberschleißheim. I was already familiar with the palace gardens from several visits, but I hadn’t really focused on the interiors until now. Read more

Evening Stroll Through Dresden

3. June 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Panorama of Dresden's Old Town at dusk with Frauenkirche, Brühl's Terrace, Residenzschloss, Hofkirche and Augustus Bridge, Saxony, Germany

Over the past few years, I’ve been to Dresden for business quite a few times. During these visits, I watched as the gaps in the Old Town were gradually filled, and cranes and construction fences disappeared from the cityscape, only to reappear elsewhere. Read more

Eguisheim – Home of Storks and a Pope

18. May 2025/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

An elderly woman with a vacuum cleaner cleans the cobblestones in Rue du Rempart with medieval half-timbered houses in the backlight of the morning sun, Eguisheim, Alsace, France

Eguisheim marked the end of our journey along the spring-like Wine Route in southern Alsace. Here too, we were once again greeted by the familiar sight of Alsace: winding alleys, window boxes overflowing with flowers, intricately adorned half-timbered houses on facades that glowed in colourful or warm earthy tones – just like in Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, Colmar or Kaysersberg. And yet, Eguisheim was different. Read more
