Lake Kochel – Magic of a mild autumn night

26. September 2023/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

I am standing on a wooden pier at Lake Kochel during the glowing dawn, Bavaria, Germany

There are places that immediately cast a spell on you, places that enchant. Lake Kochel on a mild autumn night is undoubtedly one of them. My base for the night was Schlehdorf on the western shore of Lake Kochel. Since most of the traffic is in Kochel and on the road over the Kesselberg to Lake Walchensee, it’s much quieter here in the shadow of the rocky north faces of the Herzogstand. Read more

Dawn over the Glarus Alps

2. March 2022/0 Comments/in Glarus, Sankt Gallen/by Matthias

Dawn over the mountains of the snow-covered Glarus Alps in Switzerland

After four years, I was back visiting friends at the Naturfreundehaus Tscherwald. From there, it’s just a short ski tour or snowshoe hike up to Hüttlisboden, an alpine pasture with a magnificent view over the Churfirsten, Lake Walen, and the panorama of the Glarus Alps with the peaks of Mürtschenstock, Rautispitz, and Glärnisch. Pitches right by the sea – Sardinia camping like in the catalogue

2. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Car with roof tent at a bay on the west coast of Sardinia in the glowing twilight after sunset, Italy, Europe

Dreamy pitches in Sardinia right by the sea or with magnificent views – that’s surely what most of the now numerous campers wish for. This is also what is suggested in the many sales catalogues for the vehicles. The reality, however, is often cramped, noisy and well-filled campsites. In Sardinia, however, there are still many opportunities in some places and at certain times to stay overnight a bit more secluded, legally, or at least tolerated by the local residents. Read more

Berlin High Trail via the Mörchenscharte

22. September 2019/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Mountains, glaciers on the Berlin High Trail to the Mörchenscharte above the Berliner Hütte in the evening sun, Zillertal, Tyrol, Austria

The transition from late summer to autumn often brings incomparable impressions to the high mountains of the Alps. The grass on the slopes is already taking on a yellowish-brown hue. The now significantly shorter days, however, offer longer periods with a low sun and flat light, which sculpts the landscape vividly. Long tours, on the other hand, already require the use of headlamps at dusk. In return, the weather is often more stable and there is less threat of thunderstorms. For all these reasons, our small group wanted to go on one last two-day tour on the Berlin High Trail towards the end of September, before the high-altitude huts closed for the season. Read more

Starry Sky Above the Becherhaus

28. July 2019/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

After the already impressive path during the ascent to the Becherhaus, everyone relaxed on the hut’s sun terrace and enjoyed the expansive view over the glaciers and peaks of the nearby Stubai Alps. Unfortunately, the long-distance view was somewhat obscured by clouds, but the Texel Group and the Dolomites were still discernible. Read more

By the campfire on a balmy summer night

29. June 2019/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Visiting friends back home in the lower Murg Valley, we sat by a campfire late into the balmy summer night. It reminded me of my youth, when there was always a tent pitched in some meadow or other throughout the summer holidays. My friends and I drifted between the quarry pond or swimming pool, the camp, and brief stops at home. In my memory, those sunny, humid summers seemed to last forever.

Starry Sky over Heiligenhafen

2. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Starry sky over the illuminated Heiligenhafen pier on the Baltic Sea, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

After a summer’s day on Heiligenhafen beach, a beautiful sunset, and a delicious dinner, a clear starry sky appeared over the nocturnal Baltic Sea. I couldn’t resist, especially since Heiligenhafen pier offers wonderful perspectives for photographs. Read more
