In front of Imerovigli, the highest village on the island of Santorini, Skaros Rock juts out on a narrow peninsula into the wide sweep of the caldera cliffs. As a result, it offers unique views back towards the rocky coastline with the villages of Fira, Firostefani and Oia high above the sea, as well as the islands of Nea Kameni and Thirasia. Read more

A dramatic sunrise over the iconic St. Spyridon Church with its blue domes in Oia ushered in another promising and eventful day of travel on Santorini. Only from autumn to spring does the sun, rising further south, allow for this constellation with the church and the staircase in direct backlight. This wasn’t the result of planning, but simply an unexpected travel experience. For that, I was grateful, and that’s why I appreciate travelling so much. Read more

A panoramic path leads from the centre of Fira along the crater rim of Santorini’s caldera up to Firostefani. From there, you can extend the path further uphill to the highest point in Imerovigli. In particular, the detour down to the headland with Skaros Rock would already be a worthwhile (day) destination. The further 8 kilometres of path to Oia are then more of a strenuous hike than a leisurely stroll. Read more

The restaurant Volkan on the rocks is located on a rocky outcrop on the cliffs of Santorini in Fira. From the outdoor tables and the garden bar, guests also get an optimal panoramic view of Fira and the entire caldera and islands. In the evening, the bar also offers another highlight: an open-air cinema. Read more

The dazzling bright Aegean sun shines from a blue sky through the curtain of pink bougainvillea blossoms swaying in a gentle breeze. The branches with their flower clusters swing rhythmically in the wind and seem to fly. The delicate petals glow airily light, fragile and transparent in the backlight. Even the islands in the background appear bright and light in the all-encompassing sun. This is where my association with the Aether comes from, the seat of light and the gods in the blue “upper sky” of Greek mythology. Read more

After 28 years, we had a reunion with the dramatic landscape of the volcanic island of Santorini in the Cyclades archipelago, which in turn is part of the Greek Aegean. As the winter ferry schedule is very sparse, we opted for the shorter flight to and from Athens for our arrival and departure. This allowed us to get a bird’s-eye view of those islands we got to know many years ago on a backpacking and ferry-hopping trip, as well as those still on our wish list. Read more

The island of Aegina in the Saronic Gulf, around 25 km south-west of Athens, offers scenic beauty, pretty villages, great beaches, and culinary delights: olives, lemons, bananas, passion fruit, lemons, wine, but above all pistachios.
Pistachios from Aegina belong to the Pistacia vera Aegina variety, which is exceptionally rich in nutrients and protein with a fruity, finely acidic taste. It is considered one of the best varieties in the world – and according to the locals, of course, the very best. The harvest from the small island of Aegina actually accounts for 2-3% of world trade. Along the harbour promenade of Aegina, there are stalls from various cooperatives and traders where we stocked up on pistachios and products made with them, such as pastries and butter, before we left.
