The Ethereal Lightness of the Aegean

The dazzling bright Aegean sun shines from a blue sky through the curtain of pink bougainvillea blossoms swaying in a gentle breeze. The branches with their flower clusters swing rhythmically in the wind and seem to fly. The delicate petals glow airily light, fragile and transparent in the backlight. Even the islands in the background appear bright and light in the all-encompassing sun. This is where my association with the Aether comes from, the seat of light and the gods in the blue “upper sky” of Greek mythology.

It’s quite different with this bougainvillea, featuring intensely red blossoms in the now warmer evening sun. The lush flower clusters with their strong colours appear opaque and heavy. In the lower sun, the volcanic islands already cast longer and darker shadows; the whole scene feels grounded. This reminds me more of a robust red wine.

Perhaps now would be a good time for a glass of local wine, such as a Mavrotragano, to enjoy it with the dramatic sunset beginning against this unique landscape.
