The Museum Ship Lošinjski Loger “Nerezinac”

6. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

The restored traditional cargo ship Lošinjski Loger

The restored traditional cargo ship “Nerezinac” is anchored in the port of Mali Lošinj. The ship is a two-masted topsail schooner, a so-called Lošinjski Loger, built at the end of the 19th century, capable of carrying 80-220 tonnes of cargo. As a maritime museum, it commemorates the shipbuilding tradition in the upper Adriatic and has been lovingly restored with great attention to detail, for example, the rope fenders or the blocks and deadeyes in the shrouds. Panorama at Sveti Salvadur Church

5. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View through the arches of the facade of Sv. Salvadur Chapel on Cres to the sea in sunshine, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

From the town of Cres, on the island of Cres in Croatia, a scenic circular hike leads to Sveti Salvadur Church. The small, whitewashed church sits on a hillside and offers a magnificent panorama over the Bay of Cres, towards Valun and as far as the Istrian coast.

The picturesque harbour of Veli Lošinj

18. September 2018/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Night sky over the illuminated harbour and old town of the coastal village Veli Lošinj with the church of S. Antonio Abate, Lošinj, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

The island of Lošinj extends far into the Kvarner Bay on the Croatian Adriatic coast. Right in the south-east, almost at the end of the island, lies the picturesque town of Veli Lošinj. The old town, with its colourful house facades, is clustered around the natural harbour in a sheltered bay, surrounded by pine forests. The harbour entrance and old town are dominated by the massive nave of the parish church of S. Antonio Abate and its separate bell tower. Built in the 15th century, what we see today is the Baroque facade from the reconstruction at the end of the 18th century. Besides the architecture, the interior of the church is particularly worth seeing for its valuable paintings. Read more

Hike to Krivica Bay on Lošinj

16. September 2018/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Headland with rocky coast, pine forest and turquoise sea at Krivica Bay on Lošinj island, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

The headland shown is located in the south of Lošinj at the well-known Krivica Bay. This bay forms a sheltered anchorage frequented by many sailing boats and yachts. The hike to the protected pebble beach or the rocky coast is also well worth it for swimmers. To get there, you can park on the ridge near the St. Ivan chapel on the road from Veli Lošinj to Mrtvaska and walk down to the sea – though you’ll face a half-hour climb and 230 metres of elevation on the way back. Sunrise over Osoršćica and Lošinj

16. September 2018/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View from Sv. Mikul Chapel on Osoršćica mountain of the sunrise over Lošinj island, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

Above Nerezine’s new bypass road, I leave the car, put on my backpack and headlamp. I set off into the cool air of the still dark night, following the trail marker (red and white circle) along stone walls that initially lead through macchia and pine forests up to the Osoršćica ridge. Read more

Sailing yacht off the coast of Hiddensee

9. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Sailing yacht on the calm surface of the Baltic Sea off the coast of the island of Hiddensee, Germany

The sailing yacht slowly passes by Vitte beach on Hiddensee in the morning sun. It was a warm and almost windless summer morning; the Baltic Sea lay calmly before me, and the small waves on the sandy beach were neither visible nor audible. The sea stretches flat to the horizon, which is barely distinguishable from the sky, making it seem endless. This atmosphere reminds me of the film The Truman Show, where the protagonist survives a stormy night that almost capsizes his sailing yacht, then sails towards the seemingly endless horizon on calm seas. Sunbathing on the Heiligenhafen pier

2. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

People sunbathing on deckchairs on the Heiligenhafen pier on the Baltic Sea, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

The Heiligenhafen Adventure Pier offers plenty of seating on benches and wooden loungers for sunbathing, taking in the views and relaxing – after all, the seaside resort calls itself the “Sun Deck of the Baltic”. There is a play area for children, and for couples in love, a space for padlocks has been created – German orderliness at its best. With the Meereslounge, the pier even offers a weather-protected lounge area. Especially at sunset, but also under a romantic starry sky, it is a magnet for many visitors to Heiligenhafen, who stroll from the town centre and the harbour past the marina to the sandy beach on the Steinwarder.
