Sunset over the Baltic Sea

2. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Stainless steel telescope with water droplets on the Heiligenhafen pier before sunset over the Baltic Sea

Since 2012, the adventure pier in Heiligenhafen has extended several hundred metres into the Baltic Sea, offering a magnificent view of the long sandy beaches of the Steinwarder peninsula or the historic beach villas on the Graswarder. Its northward orientation also makes it the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the Baltic. Of course, this only applies to the summer period, when the sun still sets far enough north and thus over the sea horizon. Read more

Historic Beach Houses on Graswarder

2. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Historic beach house with blue facade and thatched roof on the Graswarder peninsula on the Baltic coast near Heiligenhafen in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Near Heiligenhafen lies the Steinwarder peninsula and Graswarder, which was an island until 1954 and is now connected to Steinwarder forming a single peninsula. Long, fine sandy beaches face the Baltic Sea, while towards the mainland, so-called spits – sand strips and salt marshes – protect the lagoon behind them and the harbour entrance. At the beginning of the 20th century, with the rise of seaside resorts and bathing tourism, colourful, thatched houses were built directly in the dunes above the sandy beach. Read more

Venice Beach? Mallorca? Heiligenhafen!

1. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Beach chair and lookout on the deserted sandy beach in front of the setting sun, Heiligenhafen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Gold at the end of the rainbow

31. August 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Man on the Heiligenhafen pier watching the rainbow over the coast and the Graswarder peninsula

Just before sunset, the evening sun conjures up this rainbow over the coast near Heiligenhafen on the Baltic Sea. The Graswarder peninsula and the Fehmarn Bridge glow golden in the last rays of sunshine after a brief summer shower. By chance, the man on the pier is standing right beneath the rainbow – or could that be the fairy creature Leprechaun from Irish mythology? Read more

The Penwith Peninsula in Cornwall

30. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Beach walkers at low tide on the sandy beach of Sennen Cove, Cornwall, UK

The Penwith Peninsula in the far west of Cornwall entices with impressive coastal landscapes and small, lively harbour towns and villages. Historically shaped by fishing, agriculture, and mining, tourism has long been added – magnificent sandy beaches, walking trails like the South West Coast Path, art, and culture attract numerous travellers to the westernmost tip of the British Isles – including Land’s End, the westernmost point on the wild and rugged rocky coast, with only the rough Isles of Scilly lying offshore. As everywhere in Cornwall, the region benefits from the Gulf Stream, which ensures a mild climate. Read more

Cornish Slate at Trebarwith Strand

23. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Rocky coast with sea surf at the beach access to Trebarwith Strand, Cornwall, Great Britain

At Trebarwith Strand on Cornwall’s north coast, the colours of the sea, rocky coastline and sky often combine to create dramatic or mystical moods in a unique natural landscape. A long valley leads down to the coast, where at low tide, access to the sandy beach is possible over sloping slabs of layered, dark slate. At high tide, however, the surf crashes thunderously against the rocks. Read more

The dream beach of Kynance Cove in Cornwall

23. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

The rocks and beaches at Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, Great Britain

The beauty of Kynance Cove with its two beaches, which only appear at low tide, is certainly one of the highlights of the Cornish coast. For those not hiking the entire South West Coast Path, rounding the southernmost point of the British mainland, Lizard Point with its distinctive lighthouse, offers an easy and varied day hike that reaches its climax in the afternoon at Kynance Cove.
