Lake Molveno – first glimpse of the Brenta

27. October 2023/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Clouds drifting around the rock towers of the Brenta Dolomites in front of autumn-coloured mountain forest, Molveno, Trentino, Italy

On the way for an autumn visit to Lake Garda, I had chosen the Paganella plateau and Lake Molveno as a stopover this time. The Brenta massif has been on my tour list for a long time, so I wanted to get a first personal impression of the mountains. We left the motorway at Mezzacorona, then headed west into the narrow Noce Valley and then wound our way up and southwards via Andalo to Molveno. Read more

Evening Stroll Through Assisi

7. October 2023/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

View from Piazza Santa Chiara of the golden sunset over the Umbrian Valley and Assisi Old Town, Umbria, Italy

Autumn in Assisi is characterised by plenty of sunshine and pleasant daytime and nighttime temperatures. During the day, it wasn’t too hot for hikes and city walks, and in the evenings, it was warm enough to sit outside for a long time. The city was full of life, not just for the Feast of St. Francis. Our accommodation was a hotel in the west, slightly below the city, with a room featuring a balcony and a view of the old town, perfect for enjoying a local wine with a great view in the evenings. There, at the beginning of October, we could even still use the outdoor pool for a swim. Read more

Lake Trasimene

The ferry pier of Passignano sul Trasimeno in Lake Trasimeno, Umbria, Italy

Although there was already plenty to explore at our travel destination Assisi, we also wanted to visit nearby Lake Trasimene, as our onward journey would not take us past the lake towards Florence, but rather northeast, over the Apennines and to the Adriatic coast.

The lake is a popular holiday and recreation spot in Umbria, although the low water level in summer means a lot of algae grows, making it only partially inviting for swimming. However, the lake is considered very rich in fish, which is reflected in the menus of restaurants in many villages along the lakeside. Lago di Trasimeno also entered the history books due to Hannibal’s victory over the Romans on its northern shore in 217 BC.

The Feast of St Francis or the Franciscan Festival in the city of Assisi is a significant event celebrated every year on 4th October. During this time, there is a wide variety of events and activities honouring the life and legacy of St Francis of Assisi, the founder of the communities living according to the monastic rules he wrote. Welcome to Assisi

Welcome to Assisi and the picturesque Italian region of Umbria. Assisi is known for its fascinating history, spiritual significance and breathtaking landscapes. Autumn, with its vibrant colours and mild temperatures, is a particularly advantageous time to explore this city. On our “coast to coast” journey, we reached Assisi after impressive stays in Pisa and Talamone on the Tyrrhenian Sea, following a drive full of beautiful impressions past the springs of Saturnia and Orvieto.

The hot thermal springs of Saturnia

4. October 2023/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

An Italian man sits in the cascading waters of the hot thermal springs of Saturnia, Tuscany, Italy

On our short trip in autumn, we crossed Italy through Tuscany and Umbria, from Talamone on the west coast past Lake Bolsena and Orvieto up to Assisi. Later, we crossed the Apennines near the source of the Tiber and reached the Adriatic coast. Along the way, we came to an inconspicuous valley in the picturesque Tuscan landscape, amidst rolling hills and fragrant forests, home to the thermal springs of Saturnia. Read more

Punta del Corvo in the Maremma Regional Park

3. October 2023/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

View through blades of grass in the Maremma Nature Park Monti dell'Uccellina towards the Tuscan coast with Monte Argentario in the morning sun, Italy

The coast heading north from Talamone is already part of the Maremma Regional Park. This nature reserve in southern Tuscany covers the area south of Principina a Mare, the mouth of the Ombrone river, the Uccellina mountains and the hinterland as far as Albarese. That’s also where the visitor centre is located. Special access regulations apply for hiking, horse riding, kayaking or cycling tours. Many tours can only be done with prior registration and, in some cases, only with a guide. Read more
