The Fiery Giant – on Fogo

Destroyed house near a fresh eruption crater on the slopes of Fogo volcano, Cape Verde

After wonderful days on Santo Antão, on our departure day, we travel early in the morning with the honking convoy of taxis to the ferry port of Porto Novo, from where the ship takes us to Mindelo. We only intended to stay there one night, to catch the large ferry to Fogo the next evening. A Cape Verdean fisherman holding a freshly caught lobster, Fogo, Cape Verde

A spiny lobster fresh from the sea is a delicious meal, and spiny lobsters from Cape Verde are a sought-after delicacy worldwide. With a bit of luck, you can find fishermen around the coasts of Fogo selling their catch directly from the boat.

In the caldera of the Fogo volcano

Destroyed house near a fresh eruption crater on the slopes of Fogo volcano, Cape Verde

All of a sudden, the veil lifts at the very moment we turn into the black chaos of tuff, block and pahoehoe lava of the old collapsed crater. To our left, the semi-circular wall of the old crater towers up to 800 m, while to the right, the massive summit triangle of Pico de Fogo rises up against a deep blue sky. Read more

The Cape Verde Islands

Colourful wooden boats in the harbour of Ponta do Sol in front of the rocky coast of Santo Antao, Cape Verde

Exploited and forgotten, the Cape Verde Islands lie at the crossroads of South America, Africa, and Europe. Scorched earth and fertile valleys, deserts, mountains, and volcanoes, all exposed to the ever-present trade winds, form a harsh environment in which to live.
