In the caldera of the Fogo volcano
All of a sudden, the veil lifts at the very moment we turn into the black chaos of tuff, block and pahoehoe lava of the old collapsed crater. To our left, the semi-circular wall of the old crater towers up to 800 m, while to the right, the massive summit triangle of Pico de Fogo rises up against a deep blue sky.
Standing at 2829 metres high, the Fogo volcano on the island of the same name is the highlight of the entire archipelago and our journey through Cape Verde. The photo was taken shortly after the 1995 eruptions, which almost completely destroyed the village of Cha de Caldeiras.
