Stormy Days on Mljet

17. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View from the summit of Monte Kuc of the saltwater lakes in Mljet Island National Park against the sunset

After the sunny days in Dubrovnik, a storm front was approaching for our planned stay on Mljet Island. Large areas in the western part of the island are designated as a national park. However, there are no camping facilities there. Therefore, for the bad weather days, we had booked a holiday apartment in the hamlet of Soline, directly in the national park. This gave us both warm and dry accommodation and a central starting point for any explorations the weather might allow. Read more

A walk along the city walls of Dubrovnik

14. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Minceta Fortress and the city walls of Dubrovnik Old Town in the morning sun

One of the highlights of my stay in Dubrovnik was the walk along the massive city walls. Their origins date back to the Middle Ages and they were expanded to today’s impressive size until the 16th century. Read more

Dubrovnik at Sunset

13. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Sea kayakers paddling at sunset in the sea in front of Dubrovnik Old Town, Croatia

After a long journey and a stopover in Senj, we finally reached Dubrovnik. In previous years, we hadn’t made it quite so far, only reaching Korcula or Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula. To experience an unforgettable sunset in Dubrovnik, we had many options: with a panoramic view of the city and the sea from Mount Srd, at numerous viewpoints along the coastline such as St. Jacob’s, from one of the towers and battlements of the city walls high above the Old Town, or from a boat in the sea off the coast. Senj – Notorious for its Bora Winds

12. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Harbour pier and lighthouse of Senj on the Croatian Adriatic coast, backlit by the glowing twilight over Krk island

For the drive from Munich to Dubrovnik, Senj was a promising spot for an overnight stay on the long journey. Senj is located on the coast of the southern Kvarner Bay, below the Velebit mountains, and after many kilometres on the motorway through Germany, Austria and Slovenia, it can be reached on the final stretch from Rijeka via the scenic and winding coastal road. For continuing the journey, this is one of the few mountain passes to the motorway, which from here, after a wide curve inland, runs parallel to the coast again. Read more

Journey along the Croatian Adriatic coast – Ploče

13. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Loading crane at a loading pier in the port of Ploče, Dalmatia, Croatia

The crossing from Trpanj on the Pelješac peninsula to Ploče on the Croatian mainland is the final ferry leg of our journey along the Croatian Adriatic coast – after starting from Krk to Cres, through the Zadar archipelago, from Split to Vela Luka on Korčula and from Korčula to Orebić. Ahead of us lie several hundred kilometres of scenic coastal road on the fascinating Jadranska Magistrala.

Hike to the summit of Sv. Ilija (961 m)

13. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

The summit cross on top of Mount Sv. Ilija on the Pelješac peninsula in front of the rising sun, Southern Dalmatia, Croatia

Sv. Ilija is the dominant peak of the long mountain ranges on the Pelješac peninsula and the surrounding South Dalmatian islands of Korčula, Mljet, Brač and Hvar. The karsic rock massif forms a high-contrast backdrop for the medieval old town of Korčula on the opposite island of the same name. Even if the mountain massif with its flanks rising steeply from the sea appears wild and inaccessible from a distance, the lower slopes are covered with orchards, olive groves or vines, which are replaced by macchia, scree and rocks at higher altitudes. In shadier valleys, hollows and high plateaus, even denser pine and fir groves can be found. The mountain ranges form a massive barrier for the cool northern winds and ensure a warm climate all year round on the southern coast of Pelješac. Read more

Korčula and Pelješac in the moonlight

12. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View from the loggia at the Franciscan monastery near Orebic across the Pelješac Channel to the island of Korcula in the moonlight, Dalmatia, Croatia

From the Franciscan Monastery of Gospe od Anđela, located above Orebić on the Pelješac peninsula on the coast of southern Dalmatia, you can marvel at a magnificent island panorama: with the mountain ranges of the Pelješac peninsula at your back, your gaze wanders over the islands of Korčula, Mljet and the many small islets in between. Naturally, this view is particularly popular around sunrise and sunset, when, for example, the Old Town of Korčula on the opposite island glows golden in the last rays of sunlight. Read more
