Gellen beacon behind a dream beach on Hiddensee

The Gellen Lighthouse behind the dunes on the beach of the island of Hiddensee

The island of Hiddensee offers a sandy beach approx. 16 kilometres long on its west coast, consisting mostly of fine, light-coloured sand. On the island of Hiddensee, bathers are also traditionally relaxed when it comes to swimwear – so naked and clothed bathers share the beach together. Only dogs are not allowed within the beach sections maintained and monitored by the villages; however, outside the settlements of Neuendorf, Vitte and Kloster, there is space for everyone on the largely natural beach.

Behind the beach, a dune wall and planted pines provide protection against wind erosion. Right behind them lie salt meadows and marshes of the lagoon landscape, stretching to the eastern shore of the island, which is only a few hundred metres wide here.

The island’s beaches, the cliffs in the north with the Dornbusch hills and the tranquil fishing villages make the island of Hiddensee a destination well worth seeing. Since the island can only be reached by boat, it also offers peace and relaxation, especially after the last ferry with the day-trippers has departed.
