Gellen beacon behind a dream beach on Hiddensee

17. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Gellen Lighthouse behind the dunes on the beach of the island of Hiddensee

The island of Hiddensee offers a sandy beach approx. 16 kilometres long on its west coast, consisting mostly of fine, light-coloured sand. On the island of Hiddensee, bathers are also traditionally relaxed when it comes to swimwear – so naked and clothed bathers share the beach together. Only dogs are not allowed within the beach sections maintained and monitored by the villages; however, outside the settlements of Neuendorf, Vitte and Kloster, there is space for everyone on the largely natural beach. Dornbusch Lighthouse in the blue hour

Dornbusch Lighthouse on the island of Hiddensee in the blue hour

Dornbusch Lighthouse is the geographical and tourist highlight of Hiddensee island, located on the highland in the north of the island. To reach it, you have to conquer a mighty 72 metres in altitude. For the daily caravan of visitors who explore the island by bike or on foot in summer, this sometimes seems to be quite a challenge. If the panorama from the surrounding viewpoints isn’t enough, you can climb another 20 metres up 102 steps to the viewing platform. Read more

Sailing yacht off the coast of Hiddensee

9. September 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Sailing yacht on the calm surface of the Baltic Sea off the coast of the island of Hiddensee, Germany

The sailing yacht slowly passes by Vitte beach on Hiddensee in the morning sun. It was a warm and almost windless summer morning; the Baltic Sea lay calmly before me, and the small waves on the sandy beach were neither visible nor audible. The sea stretches flat to the horizon, which is barely distinguishable from the sky, making it seem endless. This atmosphere reminds me of the film The Truman Show, where the protagonist survives a stormy night that almost capsizes his sailing yacht, then sails towards the seemingly endless horizon on calm seas.
