Autumnal mood at Lake Achensee

13. October 2019/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

View from Vorderunnütz of the mountain landscape with autumnal mountain forests and the turquoise fjord-like Lake Achensee, Tyrol, Austria

The Lake Achensee lies like a fjord in a deep incision between the Rofan and Karwendel mountains. On its shores, mountain forests rise steeply towards rocky peaks and ridges, while the villages of Achenkirch, Maurach and Pertisau lie in the flat valley sections amidst still-green meadows. The autumn-coloured larches add splashes of colour to the dark green of the spruce and pine forests. A white veil of clouds hangs in the sky, which has a warm, milky effect on the light of the already low-lying sun and, in combination, creates a light and colour atmosphere that is unique throughout the seasons. Berlin High Trail via the Mörchenscharte

22. September 2019/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Mountains, glaciers on the Berlin High Trail to the Mörchenscharte above the Berliner Hütte in the evening sun, Zillertal, Tyrol, Austria

The transition from late summer to autumn often brings incomparable impressions to the high mountains of the Alps. The grass on the slopes is already taking on a yellowish-brown hue. The now significantly shorter days, however, offer longer periods with a low sun and flat light, which sculpts the landscape vividly. Long tours, on the other hand, already require the use of headlamps at dusk. In return, the weather is often more stable and there is less threat of thunderstorms. For all these reasons, our small group wanted to go on one last two-day tour on the Berlin High Trail towards the end of September, before the high-altitude huts closed for the season. Read more

Korčula and Orebić – Dalmatia’s binary star

11. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Motorboats and sailing boats in Orebic harbour in front of the green slopes and karst rock faces of the Sveti Ilija mountain massif on the Pelješac peninsula in the evening sun, Dalmatia, Croatia

The towns of Korčula and Orebić lie within sight of each other, separated only by a narrow strait. Both towns – often ruled by different powers throughout history, and today unequally famous among travellers – nevertheless form a kind of tourist binary star in the impressive coastal landscape of southern Dalmatia. Where Korčula delights with its medieval old town, Orebić boasts magnificent 18th and 19th-century captains’ villas. Opposite Korčula’s gentle, wooded hills and sandy beaches, the karst, rocky mountain ranges of the Pelješac peninsula with the peak of Sv. Iljia rise steeply from the sea, inviting you on scenic hikes. Read more

Helicopter over the Teplitzer Hütte

30. July 2019/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Helicopter landing at the Teplitzer Hütte in the Ridnaun Valley, Stubai Alps, South Tyrol, Italy

On the descent from the Becherhaus to the Teplitzer Hütte (2,586 m), we had been hearing helicopter noise in the Ridnaun Valley all morning. As a local from Ratschings explained to us, an exercise by the Guardia di Finanza, the border guards, was taking place on the Übeltalferner that day. Therefore, the participants, including the mountain rescue team, were flown from the Teplitzer Hütte onto the glacier. Whether they suspected hidden contraband there and were practising how to track it down, or were simply having a nice day in the mountains? Read more

Sunrise in the Stubai Alps

28. July 2019/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Clouds passing over the Übeltalferner in moonlight, Becherhaus, Stubai Alps, South Tyrol, Italy

After a star-studded and therefore short night, I wait for the sunrise at Becherhaus in the frosty dawn. Above the cold glacier surfaces of the Übeltalferner, a dynamic play of clouds formed, carried up the mountain slopes by the wind as wisps of fog, where they dissolved again in the warmer air layer. While in the west the soft light of dawn replaced the night sky full of stars, the moon still shone brightly in the east over the silent high mountain world of the Stubai Alps.

Starry Sky Above the Becherhaus

28. July 2019/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

After the already impressive path during the ascent to the Becherhaus, everyone relaxed on the hut’s sun terrace and enjoyed the expansive view over the glaciers and peaks of the nearby Stubai Alps. Unfortunately, the long-distance view was somewhat obscured by clouds, but the Texel Group and the Dolomites were still discernible. Read more

Ascent to the Becherhaus (3,195 m)

28. July 2019/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The Becherhaus in the Stubai Alps is the highest mountain hut in South Tyrol at 3,195 m.

Besides mountain peaks, valleys, or mountain lakes, the Alps also boast numerous mountain huts that are worthwhile destinations for a hike or mountain tour in themselves. The Becherhaus in the Stubai Alps, the highest mountain hut in South Tyrol, certainly belongs among them, with its exposed location on the Becher summit and the associated 360-degree panoramic view.
