Spring tour up the Jägerkamp

30. May 2019/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The sky looms dark when looking out from the Jägerkamp at Lake Spitzingsee, veiling the summit of the Guffert. In the lowlands, the colours of growth, fertility and abundance are already sprouting – the fresh, bright green of meadows and forests or the vibrant, glowing colours of spring flowers. In the mountains, where a greyed blanket of snow gives way only slowly to make room for life again, muted and earthy tones still dominate. Read more

Three-Lakes Tour in Upper Bavaria

4. May 2019/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

On this sunny day in early May, the journey is the destination. This time I wanted to visit those lakes in Upper Bavaria that are often left behind on the way to various mountain tours – Kirchsee, Sylvenstein Reservoir and Tegernsee. The first destination in the morning is Kirchsee, which is somewhat hidden north of the road from Holzkirchen to Bad Tölz. Read more

Ski tour on the Brauneck

6. January 2019/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Upper Bavaria is sinking into the snow on Epiphany 2019 – a great incentive to head out on a ski tour through a winter wonderland. Massive snowfall in the Northern Alps due to a persistent stau weather pattern ensures plenty of powder. However, the second-highest avalanche warning level is also in place, which is why a ski tour away from monitored slopes is out of the question for me. So, like so many others, I decided on the ascent to the Brauneck. Mountain solitude isn’t the priority today; it’s more about the experience of forests thick with snow and practising downhill skiing in deep powder. Read more

Starry Sky over Lake Tegernsee

10. November 2018/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

View from the Neureuth Hut of the starry sky over the nightly illuminated Rottach-Egern on Lake Tegernsee, Bavaria, Germany

The Neureuth Mountain Inn is perched at an altitude of 1264 m, offering panoramic views over Lake Tegernsee. As it’s open until 10 PM on Thursdays, it’s an ideal destination for an after-work social evening with colleagues, combining activity with nature. Read more

Sunrise over the autumnal Ahornboden

7. October 2018/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Mist drifts across the autumnal Ahornboden in front of the rock faces of the Karwendel Mountains at reddish dawn, Tyrol, Austria

The last glow of the stars fades in the rising twilight. Wisps of fog envelop the autumnally coloured sycamore maples in a milky veil. Behind the Great Ahornboden, the mighty north faces of the main ridge of the Karwendel Mountains rise darkly. The peaks of Eiskarlspitze, Spritzkarspitze, and Grubenkarspitze all lie above 2,600 m, thus towering approximately 1,400 metres above the Engtal valley. Gradually, the first scattered light of the rising sun colours the mountain peaks red, plastically sculpting ridges and couloirs from the formerly dark mass.

Sunrise over Osoršćica and Lošinj

16. September 2018/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View from Sv. Mikul Chapel on Osoršćica mountain of the sunrise over Lošinj island, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

Above Nerezine’s new bypass road, I leave the car, put on my backpack and headlamp. I set off into the cool air of the still dark night, following the trail marker (red and white circle) along stone walls that initially lead through macchia and pine forests up to the Osoršćica ridge. Read more

Berliner Hütte and Schönbichler Horn

4. August 2018/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Berliner Hütte (2,044m) in the Zillertal, Tyrol

The Berliner Hütte in the Zillertal was built in 1879 as a simple mountain shelter at an altitude of 2,044 metres and was later expanded into a magnificent ensemble that looks more like a manor house. For this reason, the Berliner Hütte was even heritage-listed in 1997. Nestled in a wild mountain landscape with glaciers and steep rocky peaks, appearing defiant and robust from the outside, the contrast with the comfortable, magnificently furnished rooms inside is quite impressive.
