Alpenglow over the Karwendel

4. December 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Alpenglow over the Karwendel at Geroldsee after sunset, Bavaria, Germany

At the end of a sunny autumn day at Geroldsee, nature puts on one last great show in the twilight spectacle of colourful autumn foliage – the alpenglow of the northern Karwendel range, caused by the red scattered light after sunset. Read more

Hummocky meadows at Lake Geroldsee

4. December 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Lake Geroldsee and the Karwendel surrounded by colourful meadows and

Lake Geroldsee (or Wagenbrüchsee) is picturesquely nestled amongst hummocky meadows and forests between the Ester Mountains, the Wetterstein and the Karwendel. In summer, it is a popular swimming lake and a favourite year-round resting spot for hiking, mountain biking, skiing or snowshoeing tours between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Walchensee, Krün and Mittenwald. Autumn Morning on Irschenberg

13. November 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Mist and fog over the autumnal Bavarian Oberland with the Wendelstein from Irschenberg in the morning sun, Bavaria, Germany

Mist and fog drift through the autumnal Bavarian Oberland with the Wendelstein. The morning dew on the meadows defies the sun on this mild November day. This magnificent view over the Chiemgau and the Bavarian Oberland can be experienced on Irschenberg, which most people know more from the traffic jams on the A8 motorway between Munich and Rosenheim. The island of Monte Isola in Lake Iseo

12. June 2016/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The islands of Monte Isola and Isola di Loreto in Lake Iseo at sunset, Lombardy, Italy

Monte Isola rises several hundred metres out of the clear waters of Lake Iseo and is accompanied by two smaller islands, Isola di Loreto (right) and Isola San Paolo (not visible). On Monte Isola, which can be reached from several places via short ferry rides, there are several villages worth seeing that can be explored by bike (the island is largely car-free) or on quiet hiking trails. At the summit of the island stands a church (Santuario) with a magnificent panoramic view over the lake and the surrounding mountains of the Bergamasque Alps. Read more

Floating Piers – Art Installation by Christo on Lake Iseo

30. May 2016/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

An art installation by Christo is being prepared on Lake Iseo

What looks like a gigantic white arrow in Lake Iseo is part of an art project by the now 80-year-old artist Christo. The “Floating Piers” are floating walkways made of approximately 200,000 floating polyethylene cubes, similar to those found as swimming platforms in local lakes. From 18 June to 03 July 2016, they will connect the two islands, Isola di San Paolo and Monte Isola, with the town of Sulzano on the shore of Lake Iseo in Northern Italy. Read more

The Tölzer Hut in Mountain Spring

9. May 2016/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Starry sky above the Tölzer Hut in the Karwendel Mountains, Tyrol, Austria

The Tölzer Hut in Karwendel, a mountain hut of the German Alpine Club at an altitude of 1,825 m, opened its 2016 hut season on Father’s Day at the beginning of May. At this time, however, the Tölzer Hut was still deeply covered in snow, as spring brought heavy snowfall and cold spells well into May. However, a high-pressure system finally promised sun and good long-distance visibility; since it was also a new moon, there should also be a star-studded night sky to see. Read more

Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle

24. April 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Tourists photographing the images on an advertising poster for prints of Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Germany

On the last weekend of April 2016, a wintry low-pressure system lay over Bavaria, bringing unusually cold temperatures and snowfall for the time of year. The stunning panorama of Neuschwanstein Castle, which looks fantastic even in winter, remained hidden from visitors that day behind snow showers and clouds. To bring home a nice souvenir photo anyway, even if they didn’t experience the visit that way themselves, many tourists use their smartphones to snap the pictures on an advertising poster at a souvenir shop just below the castle entrance.
