At the Carschina Hut below the Sulzfluh

It almost seems as if the exercise bike with the dynamo was set up to make a red-gold sunset shine on the steep south face of the Sulzfluh above the Carschina Hut in the Rätikon. In fact, the bike is available to anyone who wants to use it to charge their mobile phone – for a full iPhone battery charge, you have to pedal hard for a good hour.

The Carschina Hut (2,236 m) is located on a saddle below the steep south faces of the Sulzfluh and offers magnificent views of the main Rätikon ridge with the Schesaplana, the Madrisa and far into the Swiss mountains. I reached the hut on a scenic day trip on the southern Rätikon high trail (also signposted as the Prättigau high trail) from the Totalp Hut via the Gamslucken and enjoyed a sociable and relaxed evening with an extremely hospitable hut team, an impressive sunset and a bright moonlit night. The next day was followed by the attractive crossing of the Sulzfluh (2,818 m) through the Gemstobel to the Tilisuna Hut and further over the airy Bilkengrat ridge down to the day’s destination, the Lindauer Hut.
