The Calore Gorge near Felitto

The Calore Gorge is a tranquil and refreshing oasis, accessible from any direction only via a long drive along narrow, winding, and often bumpy roads through extensive chestnut and oak forests. The River Calore originates from the roof of Cilento on the Monte Cervati Massif and, on its journey to the Sele Plain and the sea, has carved several deep gorges into the karst uplands. Near the village of Felitto, there’s an access point for a hike through the nature reserve (WWF Reserve) of one of the most scenic Calore Gorges.Framed by steep slopes densely wooded with holm oaks and beeches, the shady path runs above the Calore, which is dammed here and thus flows sluggishly. Soon the valley narrows, and the water rushes down over rock steps and karstic cataracts, winding through deep pools and narrow ravines. A cool spray carried by waterfalls refreshes the air and fosters lush vegetation with ferns and mosses.

In this seclusion of the wild mountain landscape in the Cilento hinterland, there are numerous retreats for animals that have been displaced elsewhere, such as the otter. A network of hiking trails connects the Calore Gorge with the rocky and scenic ridge near Magliano Vetere and the rock churches, also allowing for longer tours.
