Lake Gufelsee in the Lechtal Alps

Lake Gufelsee in front of Steinkarspitze, Lechtal, Tyrol, Austria

After descending from the summit of the Kogelseespitze, Lake Gufelsee awaits in the sheltered basin below the Gufelseejoch – another highlight and a wonderful spot for a lunch break. I’m lying in the grass in the sun, watching a group of ibex on the western slopes of the Parzinnspitze, seen here on the left of the picture. To reach today’s destination, the Württemberger Haus, I’ll descend to the Hintere and Vordere Gufelalpe, before heading over the Bittrichscharte into the Obermedriol. At the Hintere Gufelalpe, a hiker carrying a rucksack full of climbing gear and a bouldering mat left me amazed. He’d already completed the entire steep climb from Gramais and told me he was going to spend this glorious day bouldering on the Gufelalpe. I remembered passing several large boulders earlier – a local secret?
