Wetterstein and Mieminger Mountains in autumn

On the way back from the tour to the summit of Mount Daniel (2,340 m), the highest mountain in the Ammergau Alps, I enjoyed the warm afternoon light over the Ehrwald basin, the western flank of the Wetterstein and the Mieminger Chain. The snow on the mountains and the vibrant colours of the forests are a reminder of the frosty start in the morning and the late autumn season. I started shortly after sunrise at the viaduct in Ehrwald and climbed via Tuftlalm, Grüner Upps and Uppspitze to Mount Daniel – a demanding but scenic day tour with 1,300 metres of elevation gain – taking about 6 hours, not counting a stop at the inviting Tuftlalm. Alternatively, you can start the ascent from Lermoos or Bichlbach – and with the Außerfern Railway, it can easily be turned into a circular tour.
