Flying Dress Photography in Santorini

7. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

A dark-skinned woman in a red dress poses for a photographer in front of St. Spyridon Church with its three blue domes, Oia, Santorini, Greece

Santorini’s unique and breathtaking landscape, Cycladic architecture, and Mediterranean atmosphere make Santorini a popular backdrop for “Flying Dress” photo shoots. For one, many newlywed couples, especially from Asia, have long been coming to the island for their honeymoons. They then pose on a terrace in front of the stunning panorama with the caldera and the other islands, or on a staircase amidst the picturesque villages. Alongside classic shots of couples in wedding dresses and suits, another photographic style has emerged here – portraits of women in so-called “Flying Dresses“. This is what these dresses with long trains that billow or “fly” in the wind are called.

Santorini: Off-season is building season

7. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

A craftsman stands on an old radio for repair work in the doorway of a shop in Oia, Santorini, Greece

When the days get noticeably shorter in November, daytime temperatures drop below 20 degrees and strong, cooler winds blow, then the off-season begins in Santorini too. Instead of up to five cruise ships daily, only one or two arrive. The winter ferry schedule and flight plan are significantly thinned out, and hardly any international flights land. All of this results in fewer day-trippers and overnight guests. Many shops, bars and restaurants have therefore already closed their doors and shutters in autumn.

To Skaros Rock at sunset

6. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

The Chapel of Saint John the Beheaded and Skaros Rock against the sunset, Imerovigli, Santorini, Greece

In front of Imerovigli, the highest village on the island of Santorini, Skaros Rock juts out on a narrow peninsula into the wide sweep of the caldera cliffs. As a result, it offers unique views back towards the rocky coastline with the villages of Fira, Firostefani and Oia high above the sea, as well as the islands of Nea Kameni and Thirasia.

Santorini: A Promising Day Dawns

5. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

St. Spyridon Church with its blue domes in Oia above the caldera of Santorini against the sunrise, Cyclades, Greece

A dramatic sunrise over the iconic St. Spyridon Church with its blue domes in Oia ushered in another promising and eventful day of travel on Santorini. Only from autumn to spring does the sun, rising further south, allow for this constellation with the church and the staircase in direct backlight. This wasn’t the result of planning, but simply an unexpected travel experience. For that, I was grateful, and that’s why I appreciate travelling so much.

On the Panoramic Path through Fira

5. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

A blue metallic telescope with a view of a cruise ship in the caldera of Santorini, Greece

A panoramic path leads from the centre of Fira along the crater rim of Santorini’s caldera up to Firostefani. From there, you can extend the path further uphill to the highest point in Imerovigli. In particular, the detour down to the headland with Skaros Rock would already be a worthwhile (day) destination. The further 8 kilometres of path to Oia are then more of a strenuous hike than a leisurely stroll.

The flip side of the dream setting

4. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Houses, electricity poles and power lines on a main road in Firostefani on Santorini with a view of the coast and Anafi island

While the tourist sights and facilities – hotels and holiday flats, restaurants, bars and shops – are lined up spectacularly on the edge of the volcanic crater’s cliffs, only the swimming beaches or ancient sites are found on the less steep outer side of the island of Santorini. Otherwise, the locals and seasonal workers in the tourism industry live their less picturesque everyday lives there.

The Volkan Cinema in Fira

4. November 2024/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

The 'Volkan Cinema' lettering above a blank wall against the panorama of the Santorini caldera with a cruise ship at dusk, Cyclades, Greece

The restaurant Volkan on the rocks is located on a rocky outcrop on the cliffs of Santorini in Fira. From the outdoor tables and the garden bar, guests also get an optimal panoramic view of Fira and the entire caldera and islands. In the evening, the bar also offers another highlight: an open-air cinema. Read more
