Open-air church service in Marina di Camerota

29. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

During an evening stroll through Marina di Camerota, you almost always end up at the Piazza San Domenico with the Chiesa di San Alfonso in the heart of the town—an inviting spot for a refreshing drink in one of the bars, a delicious meal on the terrace at Da Valentone, or for some quiet reflection in the church. Today, I find a large group of people here, sitting on chairs in front of the church. This isn’t for a reason as profane as a football match; in summer, every Saturday service is held partly outdoors due to the heat—still over 30 degrees this evening. Read more

Lively Marina di Camerota

28. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

While a busy yet serene atmosphere prevails in Marina di Camerota outside the summer season, the town fills up with predominantly Italian holidaymakers in summer and shows a different side. Towards evening, vehicles back up on the road down to the town centre and the harbour; it’s there and in the adjacent alleys leading to Piazza San Domenico that much of the public summer spectacle takes place. Sunset at the cliffs of Marina di Camerota

28. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

Marina di Camerota is located at the transition from the Cilento Riviera with the long Mingardo beach to the wild rocky coastline of the Costa di Masseta, where small beaches and narrow coves alternate with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. This makes Marina di Camerota an excellent base for coastal hikes, relaxed days at the beach, exciting boat trips or excursions by car into the hinterland. Read more

Saying Goodbye

13. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

The main towns in Cilento are – at least in summer – well connected by public transport; buses run regularly, even as far as Naples Airport. The main railway line to the south has several stops, and there are even fast boats along the coast. Many sights, such as the excavations of Velia/Elea or Paestum, as well as beaches, e.g. between Palinuro and Marina di Camerota on the Cilentan Riviera, are easily accessible by bus.

The Cilentan Riviera near Palinuro

5. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

South of Palinuro and the peninsula with the cape of the same name, stretches the kilometre-long sandy beach Spiaggia Mingardo, which, before Marina di Camerota, is separated into individual, spectacularly rock-framed coves by the steep coast moving closer to the sea. Above the brightly coloured rocks stand the ruins of medieval “Saracen towers”, where the population was watched for invaders or pirates. This impressive stretch of coast is also known as the ‘Cilentan Riviera’. Read more

Cilento hiking classic on the ‘Sentiero delle quattre spiagge’

3. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

Between Marina di Camerota and Scario on the Gulf of Policastro, the Cilento coast is wild and dramatic. The coastal road winds its way up from Marina di Camerota in many hairpin bends via Lentiscosa into the hinterland, passing Monte Bulgheria before reaching the Gulf of Policastro again at Scario. Here, the mountains move right up to the sea, rising steeply over 500 m from the water: sun-bleached yellow grassy slopes, criss-crossed by a pattern of green macchia and karstic white rock ridges, stand in sharp contrast to the azure, steel blue and turquoise of the sea and a cloudless sky. Steep cliffs and rugged crags, hidden grottoes and small bays with pebble or sandy beaches alternate, with the crumbling ruins of former coastal watchtowers always in sight above them. Read more
