Scario on the Gulf of Policastro

In the southernmost corner of Cilento, on the Gulf of Policastro and the border with Calabria, the fishing village of Scario on the Gulf of Policastro rounds off the impressively wildly romantic cliffs of the Costa della Masseta as another highlight. From the striking church tower of the Chiesa dell’ Immacolata, the harbour opens up with its promenade lined with palm trees, flowering oleanders and picturesquely spruced-up house fronts.
In the small harbour lie gleaming white boats and numerous yachts, as well as excursion boats for day trips along the coast and to the beaches, such as the Baia degli Infreschi. Behind the turquoise sea, wooded hills rise to the north, and in the hinterland the rocky mass of Monte Bulgheria juts out steeply, while the Calabrian Maratea coast opens up to the south. Mountains and sea—this combination always has a great appeal for me, as the contrasts often provide dramatic views and perspectives.
Scario is a gem worth seeing and also impresses with its serenity. The coastal road turns inland before the village, so that the place is spared from through traffic. Once the excursion boats have left the harbour, you can spend time relaxing through the midday heat in the shade of the palms or oleanders in one of the many cafes or restaurants.
