Alpenglow at Lake Antorno and the Drei Zinnen

17. October 2021/0 Comments/in Dolomites/by Matthias

The alpenglow on the Drei Zinnen is reflected in the water of Lake Antorno in the autumnal Sesto Dolomites, Italy

The road from Misurina to the Auronzo Hut at the Drei Zinnen passes directly by the idyllically situated Lake Antorno. On calm days, the famous Drei Zinnen and the rock towers of the Cadini Group are reflected in its dark water. The sunsets in autumn are particularly beautiful when the rock faces in the southwest are illuminated. However, a break at the local inn, a photo session or a short walk around the lake is recommended at any time. Read more

The Monte Albo Panoramic Road

10. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Cows stand in the midday sun on the road along the wild, karstic mountain range of Monte Albo, Baronia, Sardinia, Italy

The grey-white, karstic limestone mountains of Monte Albo rise over 1,000 m in eastern Sardinia. The main road between Posada and Nuoro runs along its southern slopes. To the north, a winding tarmac road snakes its way at mid-altitude through mountain forests, barren high pastures, deep valleys and scenic peaks. Read more

Hike at Torre Argentina

1. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Rocky island S'Isula de sas Crabas in the waters of a bay at Torre Argentario on the west coast of Sardinia in the warm morning sun, Italy, Europe

The scenic diversity and beauty of Sardinia’s west coast are best experienced on foot, hiking along the coast or in the mountains of the hinterland. The coastal section at Torre Argentina, north of Bosa, is ideal for this: impressive nature, a rugged rocky landscape, refreshing swimming opportunities in the crystal-clear sea, and an inviting place to stop for delicious food with a unique coastal panorama. The Ranui Chapel in front of the Geislerspitzen

2. October 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Autumnal landscape of the Dolomites with the Ranui Chapel in Villnöß in front of mountain forests and the rock faces of the Geisler Peaks in the sunshine, Puez-Geisler Group, South Tyrol, Italy

After three days of touring in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park – to the Schlüterhütte, back via the Medalgesalm to Campill and up the Zwölferkofel – I had planned further highlights for the return journey. At the junction from the Campill Valley to St. Martin in Thurn, I therefore turned west onto the road to the Würzjoch. This allowed me to more or less circle the Peitlerkofel and cross the pass into the Villnöß Valley, to experience the famous panorama of the Geislerspitzen from another perspective. Villnöß is also the home of the two famous mountaineers Reinhold and Günther Messner. They had their first climbing experiences on the rock faces and ridges of the Puez-Geisler, right on their doorstep, so to speak. Read more

Autumnal Alpine Panorama from Zwölferkofel

2. October 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Summit cross of Zwölferkofel in front of an autumn landscape with the Campill Valley, Peitlerkofel and the panorama of the main Alpine ridge in autumn sunshine, Puez-Geisler Group, Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy

After a long and eventful day, and a short, frosty night, the hike from Campill to Zwölferkofel was scheduled for early morning. The mountain forms a cornerstone at the entrance to the Zwischenkofel Valley and, at 2,384m high, promises excellent views. Read more

Sunrise at the Geisler Peaks

2. October 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The Geisler Peaks of the Puez-Geisler Group above the Schlüterhütte glow at dawn, Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy

My room for the night in the Schlüterhütte wasn’t heated, but thick down duvets and the tiredness after the ascent from Campill let me sleep deeply, softly and warmly. There’s only that one moment of overcoming when you have to leave the cosy cocoon in the morning and get into cool clothes. For me, this moment came before sunrise, which I absolutely wanted to spend again on the summit of Zendleser Kofel with a view of the Geisler Peaks. Read more

Autumn Hikes in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park

2. October 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The Schlüterhütte Rifugio Genova in front of snowy mountains and rocky peaks of the Puez-Geisler Group in the Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy

After the first autumnal snowfall at the end of September, a short window of good weather and sunshine was forecast. I wanted to spend a night at the Schlüterhütte, at 2,300 m at the transition from Campill to the Villnöß Valley. It is a central base for tours on and around the Peitlerkofel, the Villnöß Geisler, and the Puez and Geisler Peaks, but it is also located on Dolomiten Höhenweg No. 2 and the long-distance hiking trail Munich – Venice.
