View of Anthéor and Cap Roux

8 October 2009/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

The Bay of Agay with the settlement of Anthéor and Cap Roux, a mountain of the Estérel Massif, Côte d'Azur, France

From Cap Dramont, the view stretches across the Bay of Agay with the settlement of Anthéor and the Pic de Cap Roux, a mountain in the Estérel Massif. The Côte d’Azur coast is so contrasting; on one hand, it’s urban, noisy, and densely populated like Cannes, Nice, etc., while on the other, you find quiet and more natural areas such as the Estérel Massif and the Côte d’Or with its impressive coastal road. In Agay and Anthéor, there are also few architectural blights, but above all, the nature park attracts visitors for hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. More pictures of Cap Dramont, the Estérel Nature Park, and the Côte d’Azur can be seen in the ‘France’ gallery.

Full Moon over Cap Dramont

7 October 2009/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

Evening atmosphere with a full moon at Cap Dramont, Estérel, Côte d'Azur, FranceAt Cap Dramont, I experienced the full fascination of the Estérel coast in a small area: a rugged rocky coastline with bizarre rock formations made of the reddish volcanic rock that characterises the Estérel Massif, Mediterranean macchia, and the deep blue sea of the Côte d’Azur. From the summit with its lighthouse, at an incredible 162 metres above sea level, you can see Agay Bay, Anthéor and the Pic de Cap Roux in the Estérel Nature Park to the northeast. In the opposite direction, you overlook the Gulf of Fréjus, the Massif des Maures and the peninsula near St. Tropez. Near Plage de Camp Long, there’s a car park – the access road from the N98 is a little inconspicuous on a bend – from which the summit and many viewpoints are easily accessible. I experienced atmospheric and peaceful moments here, especially at dusk. More pictures of Cap Dramont, the Estérel Nature Park and the Côte d’Azur can be seen in the ‘France’ gallery.

Hiking and Biking in the Estérel Massif

6 October 2009/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

From the summit of Cap Roux in the Estérel Massif, you can enjoy a view over the entire coast as far as St. Tropez, Estérel Massif, Côte d'Azur, France

The Estérel Massif lies between St. Raphael and Cannes, stretching from the coast deep into the hinterland and is largely a protected nature reserve. The mountains are of volcanic origin, hence reddish, yellow, or grey rocks glow above the green of oaks, cedars, and chestnuts, many types of pines, as well as gorse, heather, lavender, mimosa, and the typical shrubs of the maquis. Morning Mood on the Côte d’Azur

5 October 2009/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

Morning atmosphere at the Corniche d'Or, the Estérel Massif and the classic Côte d'Azur, France

From the summit of Cap Roux, a panoramic mountain in the Estérel Massif, 454 metres above the Côte d’Azur coast, I experienced a peaceful and tranquil morning atmosphere. In the distance, Cannes and Nice are visible, and to the left lies Pic de L’Ours, which is reached by one of the few roads in the Estérel Natural Park open to cars. This stretch of coastline is also known as the Côte d’Or, named after the reddish-yellow hue of the rocks, which are of volcanic origin. More pictures can be seen in the ‘France’ gallery.

Summit of Cap Roux on the Corniche d’Or

4 October 2009/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

On the summit of Cap Roux, a map explains the 360-degree panorama, Estérel, Côte d'Azur, France At the summit of Cap Roux, an enamel map explains the 360-degree panorama, featuring the Estérel Massif, the coastline of the Côte d’Azur from Nice to St. Tropez, and the hinterland. The Estérel Massif is located between St. Raphael and Cannes and is designated as a nature park. The Corniche d’Or is a stunning panoramic road running along the coast, but the main traffic, via the motorway, bypasses the area in the hinterland. The Estérel Massif is only accessible by car via a single access road, making it ideal for hiking, mountain biking, or climbing; the beaches are also just a few minutes away. The summit of Cap Roux is excellent for a sunrise tour. In the foreground, you can see the ‘Pilon’ cliffs, behind them Anthéor and Cap Dramont, and in the background on the horizon, the peninsula of St. Tropez. More pictures can be seen in the ‘France’ gallery.
