The dripstone cave of Castelcivita

20. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

In the northern hinterland of Cilento lies the Monti Alburni mountain range, whose name may be derived from the light colour of the karstic limestone rocks. Over millions of years, water has washed sinkholes, grottoes and caves out of the mountains, which today offer us spectacular natural spectacles. This is also the case in the Grotte di Castelcivita dripstone cave on the western slope of the Alburni Mountains in the Calore Valley, which has been made accessible to visitors and can be viewed on guided tours. Castelcivita in the Alburni Mountains

20. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

The Alburni Mountains are a massif in southern Campania and, with Monte Panormo (1,742 m, also known as Monte Alburno), represent the second-highest peak in Cilento. Like Monte Cervati or Monte Bulgheria, these ‘white’ karst mountains show different faces depending on where you stand: from the valleys of the Sele and Tanagro rivers or the Vallo di Diano, rugged rocks and limestone pinnacles several hundred metres high rise above forested areas criss-crossed by gorges. From the south-west in the valley of the Calore, however, the mountains appear more accessible, with broad plateaus, gentler slopes, and long ridges overgrown with bushy macchia and thistle-filled meadows. Lost World Cave, Waitomo

15. February 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

Lost World Cave, WaitomoAfter abseiling over 100 m, my guide and I take a short break in the first section of the cave, where sunlight still penetrates the thick fog and an underground river rages from the depths of the cave beneath the surrounding boulders.

Lost World, Waitomo Caves

15. February 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

100m Abseiling into the Lost World Cave, WaitomoThe adventure began with a breathtaking 100-metre abseil down to the entrance of the “Lost World“. This cave is one of the highlights of the Waitomo area, which is known for its spectacular underworld. The path wound between and over rocks, deeper into the gaping maw of the karst cave, which quickly became increasingly narrow and dark. My eyes adjusted to the dim light, and suddenly I saw thousands of “stars” in the sky. Glow-worms, attracting prey with their light from the ceiling, were the reason. Beneath my feet, an underground river rushed, accompanying me on my further journey through the wonderland of stalagmites and stalactites.
