Alpine panorama on the Hohenpeißenberg

The Hohenpeißenberg isn’t exactly a hidden gem, but it’s still well worth a visit. From the summit of this mountain in the Bavarian Alpine Uplands, you can enjoy an unobstructed panorama across the entire Alpine arc, from the Allgäu to the Chiemgau. The view to the north, overlooking the landscape south of Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg, is also lovely, but not quite as spectacular.

That’s why the car park is on the north side and the viewing terrace is on the south. In the middle sits the pilgrimage church of Mariä Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Mary), whose origins date back to the 16th century. Even today, it still draws many pilgrims to the mountain.

However, the majority certainly come for the great view; there are also plenty of parking spaces for campers to enjoy this magnificent panorama overnight. I came mainly for the silvery afternoon light with the clouds over the mountains. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations on-site, but the sunset that evening was grandly colourful.
