Instagrammable Lake Braies
After the solitary sunrise over the Sesto and Braies Dolomites from the summit of Dürrenstein, I wanted to get a personal impression of the famous, much-visited and photographed Lake Braies for myself. I have to say, the lake is beautifully nestled in a rocky high-mountain landscape – the dark blue-turquoise water, the autumnally coloured yellow-golden larches, the blue sky and the towering, rugged rock faces of the Seekofel.
Of course, I’ve seen this motif (too) many times in different seasons and from a wide variety of perspectives, so that my own individual photographic engagement with the subject was a challenge. The lakeside promenade and the circular path were already very busy, and many visitors were taking photos around and on the boathouse with its rowing boat hire. So I decided to include the contemporary Instagram phenomenon. Two pairs of photos form key elements in the image, which combines different perspectives and impressions of my (short) stay as a collage.
The historic hotel from 1899 has already lived through some special events and hosted prominent guests, in particular the SS prisoners liberated at the end of the Second World War.
