Swedish houses in Vagnsunda on Yxlan, Archipelago, Sweden

Typical Swedish houses on the island of Yxlan – in the archipelago off Stockholm, the skerries coast, are now home to only a few permanent residents. The other houses belonging to families who have moved to cities like Stockholm, and who can often trace their family history on the islands back centuries, are also well-maintained and used as weekend and holiday residences.

Many of the houses in the skerries can only be reached by private boat, as only a few islands are accessible by car ferry and have a road network. Alternatively, regular passenger ferry services from Stockholm or Waxholm provide access to the island world on the east coast.

Yxlan is largely forested, interspersed with pastureland. The coastline often features rocks polished smooth during the Ice Age and romantic coves. Some of the houses are also available for rent, making them ideal for a peaceful stay to relax or for activities on foot or on the water, e.g., canoeing, sea kayaking, rowing, fishing, etc.
