Lighthouse on Yxlan

Lighthouse on the island of Yxlan in the archipelago off Stockholm (Archipelago) on the east coast of Sweden

East of Stockholm, Lake Mälaren flows into the sea in what is known as the Archipelago, a large area with many large and small skerries along the Baltic Sea coast. Important shipping routes to and from Stockholm lead through this labyrinth, so from an otherwise secluded island, you can watch the huge, multi-decked ferry or cruise ships heading out to the open sea several times a day.

On the western shore of Yxlan island, an island like those known from the TV series “Seacrow Island”, stands this small lighthouse; the route to Finland and the Baltics passes by the island. In the evening, from this scenic rock, smoothed by the Ice Age, I watch the night ferries of various companies pass by one after another. After the ships are out of sight and the lapping of the spreading bow wave against the rocks has subsided, a contemplative silence returns.
