Summer, Sun, Philosophers

After visiting the excavations of the former ancient Greek colony of Elea, which was home to a famous school of philosophy, I went for a stroll with my own thoughts along the miles of sandy beach in the Bay of Velia/Ascea. A refreshing dip in the clear sea water is the ideal way to round off a cultural trip for a perfect day out in Cilento.
The southern section of the bay is less crowded than the promenade areas in the villages with their numerous holiday flats. Footpaths lead from the roadside car parks to the sea, and every now and then you can enjoy a coffee or a meal at a lido (and keep the kids quiet with an ice cream). Since it’s mainly Italians who holiday here, the beach scene is still quite manageable until July or from the beginning of September.
