Panorama of Wasserburg am Inn

The medieval Old Town of Wasserburg am Inn is strategically located on the alluvial cone of a large loop of the River Inn. Access from the land is only a few hundred metres wide, making it easy to defend. The Inn bridge, first mentioned in the 14th century, was of immense importance, placing the town at the crossroads of trade routes; Wasserburg particularly profited from the salt trade on the Inn and prospered. The history of Wasserburg is in many ways comparable to other towns in eastern Bavaria, such as Burghausen (on the Salzach) or Passau at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz, all of which are also worthwhile destinations, a fact reflected in their architecture. From the opposite bank and the Inn bridge, visitors can see a long row of houses along the riverbank, with the bridge in the middle leading to the town gate and inviting them to explore the Old Town of Wasserburg with its medieval alleys.
