At the mouth of the river Bruna into the Tyrrhenian Sea stand two towers – a blue and a red lighthouse. The towers show seafarers a safe way into the harbour of Castiglione della Pescaia, a fishing and bathing resort on the southern Tuscan coast. Read more
The pine forest is a defining feature of the Tuscan coast. On sandy soils, Mediterranean pines often form a wide belt of woodland behind the beaches. Broad crowns sit atop tall, slender trunks. A gentle sea breeze creates a soft rustling sound and sets the trees into a slow swaying motion. In the shade of these forests, campsites, apartment complexes, and holiday resorts have sprung up in many places. This is also the case in the area around Castiglione della Pescaia in the Maremma. The evening atmosphere on the Piazza del Campo in Siena is incomparable. The numerous restaurants, whose terraces line the upper edge of the square, offer a prime spot to observe the goings-on. Children play, travellers wander around, admiring and photographing the unique medieval architecture. Scattered groups or families sit spread across the wide square. After the last rays of sun made the top of the bell tower glow like a torch, the facades appear to be still radiating the day’s heat in the golden hour. Read more
In the summer of 2020, travel planning was shaped by the Corona pandemic. Which destinations were not risk areas, and where could one travel safely and in a relaxed way? We definitely wanted to see the sea and opted for the Maremma in southern Tuscany. On the way there, we planned an overnight stay in Siena, which we had last visited about 18 years ago. Read more
