Mediterranean Full Moon Night in Tuscany
The evening atmosphere on the Piazza del Campo in Siena is incomparable. The numerous restaurants, whose terraces line the upper edge of the square, offer a prime spot to observe the goings-on. Children play, travellers wander around, admiring and photographing the unique medieval architecture. Scattered groups or families sit spread across the wide square. After the last rays of sun made the top of the bell tower glow like a torch, the facades appear to be still radiating the day’s heat in the golden hour.
For a Friday evening, the restaurant tables, already thinned out due to the risk of infection, are surprisingly not all occupied. This clearly shows the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the travel and tourism industry. According to restaurant and campsite owners, international guests were particularly absent, especially from Asia and America, in addition to Germans. Nevertheless, some of the shortfall was compensated by Italians travelling within their own country. Generally, they spoke of a 40 to 60% drop in guests this summer. At least we did our part for the economic recovery.
Shortly afterwards, the full moon rose behind the Palazzo Pubblico, intensifying the romantic atmosphere to the point of kitsch. The bright moonlight accompanied us all the way back through the old town to the car park or pitch for the night. We admired the panorama for a while longer from our roof tent before, exhausted from the day, we fell asleep and only woke again with the dawn of a new sunny summer day in Tuscany.
