The Weeping Eye of the Futuro

25. September 2024/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Art installation Futuro House by Matti Suuronen, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
On a meadow in front of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the egg-shaped Futuro House by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen has stood like a landed UFO since 2017. This vision for modern architecture from 1968 didn’t catch on in the market, though today it would experience a renaissance as a Tiny House. At a time of political upheaval, before the oil crisis and the announcement of the “Limits to Growth“, the technical and architectural design concept was nevertheless visionary.

Architecture of the Museum Brandhorst in Munich

25. September 2024/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Glass, metal and polychrome ceramic rods on the exterior facade of the Museum Brandhorst in Munich, Bavaria, Germany

With its colourful facade, the Museum Brandhorst is a striking cornerstone in the northeast of Munich’s Kunstareal. It’s intended to build a bridge between the artistic ideas in the museums and the everyday lives of people in the neighbouring districts. The entire building is not only architecturally outstanding, but also in terms of its building services. It’s built to be as sustainable as possible – from the lighting design, which uses as much natural daylight as possible instead of artificial light, to the heating and ventilation, which is a particular challenge given the constant climate requirements of artworks. Céret and the Arts

5. June 2024/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

A group of elderly artists painting in the square with the Pablo Picasso fountain in the old town of Céret, France

Céret, the picturesque small town in Occitania, Southern France, has captivated numerous famous artists. The unique combination of stunning landscapes, mild climate, Mediterranean atmosphere, and vibrant cultural life has made Céret a hotspot in the art scene. Artists like Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Juan Gris, as well as composers and sculptors, found inspiration here and immortalised the town as a motif in their works. On our journey through the artistic triangle in Catalonia – Collioure, Cadaqués, and Céret – we could easily understand why.

Vienna Secession – Rhythm and Form

13. April 2023/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Details of the dome made of wrought-iron gilded foliage on the Vienna Secession building.

The exhibition building of the Vienna Secession, a group of visual artists from the late 19th century in Vienna, is a total work of art encompassing architecture, sculpture, and painting. Among the members of the artists’ group, Gustav Klimt is often named as the figurehead. However, the contributions of architect Joseph Maria Olbrich, Koloman Moser, and many other artists were equally instrumental in creating a coherent and detailed Art Nouveau building. Read more

The Mühlental of Campill

2. October 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Rustic log cabin of a historic grain mill in the Mühlental of Campill, South Tyrol, Italy

After stowing my heavy rucksack in the car and freshening up following the circular hike to the Schlüterhütte and the impressive sunrise over the Geisler Peaks, I visited the mills in the Mühlental, which are well worth seeing. Today, they serve as a museum and can occasionally be viewed from the inside, where you can watch a grinding mechanism in operation. Outside, you can still see the wooden pipes that carry the water from the stream on stilts to drive the water wheels.

The Museum Ship Lošinjski Loger “Nerezinac”

6. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

The restored traditional cargo ship Lošinjski Loger

The restored traditional cargo ship “Nerezinac” is anchored in the port of Mali Lošinj. The ship is a two-masted topsail schooner, a so-called Lošinjski Loger, built at the end of the 19th century, capable of carrying 80-220 tonnes of cargo. As a maritime museum, it commemorates the shipbuilding tradition in the upper Adriatic and has been lovingly restored with great attention to detail, for example, the rope fenders or the blocks and deadeyes in the shrouds.
