Vernet-les-Bains – charming atmosphere and spectacular nature
After Prats-de-Mollo, Vernet-les-Bains was our second secluded destination at the foot of the imposing Canigou Massif in the French Pyrenees. Known as a health resort with a mild microclimate and thermal springs, it’s a perfect place for relaxation, culture, and outdoor adventures. The days when the town was fully booked with spa guests and summer visitors escaping the hot lowlands and coast are long gone. In the old town, rural depopulation is evident with many empty buildings. Nevertheless, Vernet-les-Bains combines charming atmosphere, historical sites, and spectacular nature, seclusion and tranquillity. This was exactly the mix we had hoped for.
From our pitch at the cosy and relaxed campsite, we had a magnificent panoramic view of the old town on the other side of the valley. The old town, with its narrow, cobbled streets, is overlooked by a Romanesque church and the remains of a medieval castle, surrounded by mountain forests.
A sunny day followed a misty morning, ideal for a hike. At the end of the valley near Casteils, numerous hiking trails of all difficulty levels begin, leading into the impressive mountain world of the Canigou Massif. For experienced hikers, the summit of Canigou (2,784 m) is a must. The mountain is considered a sacred place by the Catalans and offers breathtaking panoramic views. The ascent takes several hours but is an absolute highlight. Even without aiming for the summit, you can circumnavigate the massif, staying overnight in one of the mountain huts. Long-distance hiking trails also pass through here.
The ascent to the Saint-Martin-du-Canigou monastery is one of the most rewarding excursions. The hike takes about 1-2 hours in total and is ideal for anyone wanting to combine nature and culture. The steep path leads through dense forests and constantly offers spectacular views of the rocks at the foot of the Pyrenees. Finally, you reach the famous Romanesque monastery of Saint-Martin-du-Canigou, perched on a rocky outcrop.
Founded in the 10th century, it fascinates with its unique architecture, artfully designed cloisters, and spiritual atmosphere. Benedictine monks lived here for eight centuries. After that, the monastery stood empty until the beginning of the 20th century and fell into ruin. Today, the Community of the Beatitudes manages the monastery and also guides visitors through the restored buildings.
The view of the valley and the surrounding mountains is breathtaking and makes the visit unforgettable. From the cloister, one looked out onto a wild, almost mystical mountain world in a milky light, which evoked in me the association with the magical elven refuge “Rivendell” in the epic “The Lord of the Rings”.
The tour was led by an American student who was doing it for the summer. Today was her premiere – in perfect French, informative, entertaining – and under the strict, scrutinising eyes of a nun who was constantly taking notes.
Thus, Vernet-les-Bains combines cultural sights, breathtaking nature, and a relaxed way of life – the place offers inspiration and recreation amidst the Pyrenees.
