Sea of Fog in a Winter Wonderland
After the ski tour at Spitzingsee on a glorious sunny winter day, the return journey took me through the Bavarian Prealps. Instead of joining the traffic jam on the motorway, I preferred to take the country road to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere at sunset.
Thick layers of fog swirled over the frosty snow in valleys, hollows, and depressions, which had never quite dissipated in the previous days. One moment the landscape revealed a magnificent panorama, the next I was enveloped in a cottony white.
Without the warming sun, the temperature remained constantly below freezing. Therefore, tiny ice hairs had grown from the water droplets of the fog onto the icy surfaces, so that a frosty coat seemed to cover the landscape.
