Thunderstorm Front Over Bavaria

A summer thunderstorm front sweeps across Bavaria, Germany.

I drove from Stuttgart to Munich, ahead of the approaching cold front, and literally saw the following thunderstorms in my rearview mirror. Having arrived and stepped out, I was met by the muggy, oppressive air. Threateningly huge cloud towers were already gathering from the west, suddenly darkening the sky and abruptly ending the twilight. In the background, the city of Munich glowed, while lightning flashed erratically in the clouds, accompanied by the permanent rumble of thunder.

Lightning over Bavaria, Germany

I watched the spectacle from the attic window, impressed, but also with immense respect – I once observed an approaching thunderstorm, carelessly placed my hand on the metal frame of the window on the roof, and received a severe electric shock when lightning struck in the (not necessarily immediate) vicinity.
