Marylebone High Street Brunch

3. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Inside the Coco Momo Cafe on Marylebone High Street, London, Great Britain

After a long walk through the consumer paradise of London’s Regent Street and Oxford Street, and an extensive browse of designer fashion at Selfridges department store, we decided to escape the hustle and bustle. We followed Baker Street north, then turned onto Marylebone High Street. There you’ll find small but very appealing shops – fashion, design, or books. For the latter, the amazed traveller will discover the famous travel bookshop Daunt Books, whose Edwardian gallery is reminiscent of a classic library. Read more

The Humour of the Yeomen Warders of the Tower of London

2. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Yeoman Warder during a tourist tour of the Tower of London

The “Yeomen Warders” evolved from the bodyguard of the English kings and are now both guards and museum guides at the Tower of London, a ring fortress with origins in the 11th century, where the priceless Crown Jewels are kept today. Yeomen Warders are all former members of the British Army and wear a dark blue tunic with a red collar as their uniform. The guards are also known as “Beefeaters”, with several explanations for the origin of this term. Read more

Full Moon over the Thames

Full moon over Tower Bridge and the Thames, London, Great Britain

Slowly, the full moon rises from the city haze, gaining definition and detail against the silhouette of the buildings along the Thames embankment and the majestically lit Tower Bridge behind the museum ship HMS Belfast. One of those rare, mild and dry summer evenings for London draws people out onto the riverside promenades with their pub, cafe and restaurant terraces. Read more

Tower Bridge in London at night

2. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

On Tower Bridge at night, London, Great BritainTower Bridge over the Thames in the City of London is one of the architectural highlights and arguably one of the most beautiful views of London, while the view from the bridge itself presents an impressive London skyline: from City Hall (by Norman Foster) on the London Riverside and “The Shard” skyscraper (by Renzo Piano) to the Financial District with its characteristic office towers such as “The Gherkin” (Ken Shuttleworth and Norman Foster) or 20 Fenchurch Street (the “Walkie-Talkie Tower” by Rafael Viñoly, often perceived as ugly), which tower far above the venerable Tower of London. Tower Bridge, with its two towers, is a combined suspension and bascule bridge. Brightly painted steel girders are riveted into so-called chains, from which steel rods support the bridge deck. Mounted sentry at Horse Guards in London

2. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Portrait of a mounted sentry of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment at the Horse Guards building in London

The Life Guards of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment stand at the gate of Horse Guards, a building in London between Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade. The sentries, with their red tunics, white horsehair plumes and metal helmets, are a classic London photo opportunity and are photographed hundreds, if not thousands, of times every day. Read more
