During an excursion to Monte Isola on Lake Iseo, the humid heat of this June afternoon slowly gave way to evening. From the west, darker clouds were already pushing over the sun, promising both the looming threat of a thunderstorm and the welcome refreshment of a rising wind and hopefully a few cooling raindrops. The steep, rocky flanks of Corna Trentapassi rise steeply over 1,000 m from the eastern shore of Lake Iseo between Marone and Pisogne. The mountain forms a massive barrier towards the northern end of the lake and simultaneously creates its narrowest point. This is why Corna Trentapassi always seems within reach from Riva di Solto on the opposite shore. The summit sits at 1,248 m and offers an outstanding 360-degree panorama over the entire Lago d’Iseo, the Brescia Prealps, and the Bergamo Alps. From my accommodation in Marone, the summit cross is visible, so of course I couldn’t resist going for a hike up there. Read more
For a hike, the area around Lake Iseo is rich in routes, from challenging mountain tours to easy strolls. There are many panoramic peaks that rise steeply around the lake, such as Corna Trentapassi or Punta Almana. Punta Almana (1,390 m) even offers an easy traverse along an airy ridge; depending on your skill level, there’s also a more exposed variant over scree and rocky sections. Read more
The sun has just emerged from behind the mountain ranges and shines milky through the haze onto Lake Iseo. The morning on the promenade in the small village of Riva di Solto is windless and still quiet, but already very warm – a hot and humid summer day is on the cards. Therefore, I choose a shady spot under a parasol at one of the Caffé del Porto’s tables for breakfast. Read more
Monte Isola rises several hundred metres out of the clear waters of Lake Iseo and is accompanied by two smaller islands, Isola di Loreto (right) and Isola San Paolo (not visible). On Monte Isola, which can be reached from several places via short ferry rides, there are several villages worth seeing that can be explored by bike (the island is largely car-free) or on quiet hiking trails. At the summit of the island stands a church (Santuario) with a magnificent panoramic view over the lake and the surrounding mountains of the Bergamasque Alps. Read more
What looks like a gigantic white arrow in Lake Iseo is part of an art project by the now 80-year-old artist Christo. The “Floating Piers” are floating walkways made of approximately 200,000 floating polyethylene cubes, similar to those found as swimming platforms in local lakes. From 18 June to 03 July 2016, they will connect the two islands, Isola di San Paolo and Monte Isola, with the town of Sulzano on the shore of Lake Iseo in Northern Italy. Read more
