At the town beach of Santa Maria di Castellabate

28. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

In Santa Maria di Castellabate, the picturesque town centre, with its various palazzi and a fortified watchtower, is clustered right around the harbour and a small sandy beach. A stroll through the alleys reveals many perspectives that would make a perfect film set for pirate movies – in fact, “Benvenuti al Sud“, the Italian version of the French hit film “Welcome to the Sticks”, was filmed here. Behind the coastal town, on a hill about 260 m high, lies the medieval Castellabate, which is also well worth a visit. The “Belvedere” viewing balcony is famous for its magnificent sunsets and also provides a grand backdrop for the human tragedies, comedies, and dramas of life in Cilento.

The stage is set in Castellabate

28. October 2013/0 Comments/in Cilento/by Matthias

The square known as the “Belvedere” in the medieval town of Castellabate, which lies on a hill 260 m above the harbour and the beaches of Santa Maria di Castellabate, owes its name to the magnificent view of the Cilento coastline on the Gulf of Salerno, extending as far as Amalfi and Capri on a clear day. Especially at sunset, the panorama becomes almost unbearably beautiful. However, the vast panorama and natural spectacles are merely the grand backdrop for the human tragedies, comedies, and dramas of life in Cilento, which reveal themselves through close observation of the people in the square, as public squares in Italy are a grand stage for real life.
