Marienberg Fortress above Würzburg

The sunny, early summer Prince's Garden in Renaissance style at Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg on the Main, Germany

As we collected our new James Baroud roof tent ourselves from the German importer Genesis Import in Schwarzach am Main, we took the opportunity for a trip to Würzburg. In early summer weather, we strolled through the city centre to the Old Main Bridge. There, tourists and locals alike gathered for a glass of wine and good conversation, with the fantastic view of Marienberg Fortress thrown in.

View from the Old Main Bridge to Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg, Bavaria, GermanyFrom the Old Main Bridge, a scenic circular path can be taken to the former prince-bishop’s palace. Through the vineyards, a shadeless path leads below the east and south-facing fortress walls, climbing 100 metres up to the large car park. Through forecourts, one eventually reaches the core of the original castle complex via the impressive Scherenberg Gate. Marienberg has been settled since the Bronze Age, utilising its strategic location high above the Main Valley. The complex has since experienced turbulent times – wars, fires, different rulers – and resulting alterations and extensions.

The keep, well, and Marienkirche in the castle courtyard are among the oldest buildings of Marienberg Fortress above Würzburg, Bavaria, GermanyFrom initial settlements and a medieval castle (around 1200), a four-winged Renaissance palace complex emerged. After the Thirty Years’ War, the ensemble was transformed into a Baroque fortress, before final extensions were made in the 18th century – this is how the current, restored palace complex presents itself to visitors. The Marienkirche in the castle courtyard, incidentally, is based on the walls of a Merovingian circular building from the early 8th century, making it one of Germany’s oldest buildings.

The Prince’s Garden, located in front of the east wing, is an unparalleled viewing terrace with the Main Valley and Würzburg city centre at its feet. It’s a great place to linger before the return journey leads through the tree-lined park via the Tellsteige down through the Neutor back to the Old Main Bridge.
