Abandoned Apron at BER Airport
That this emptiness and quiet on the apron would still persist in 2013 and beyond – many Berliners couldn’t have imagined that back in April 2012, when the photo was taken, two months before the then-official opening date in June.
The unfortunate and now well-known story of the Berlin Airport construction site – the postponement of completion by years, cost increases many times over the original plan – is often mentioned in the same breath as projects like Stuttgart railway station or the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Incidentally, if the control tower looks familiar – the successful design by architects Ondra & Partner was also implemented at airports such as Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
