The Santorini Caldera
This is the classic postcard view of Santorini looking out towards the island of Nea Kameni in the middle of the water-filled caldera, a reminder of the island’s volcanic origins. Around 1628 BC, the volcano erupted, creating layers of ash and pumice metres thick and burying several Mediterranean civilisations under a tsunami. Today, you can enjoy this view safely and at your leisure to the sound of classical music with a pricey drink in one of the many bars and restaurants spilling down the cliffs. Alternatively, you can enjoy it for free from anywhere along the panoramic path that winds through Fira and other picturesque villages along the crater’s edge, past charming churches and typical cubic houses, all the way to Oia in the west of Santorini.
