Bergen harbour with tall ships

In 1993, the Norwegian city of Bergen was a port of call for the Cutty Sark Tall Ship Races, which is why the harbour was filled with tall ships, such as the “Towarischtsch” (formerly the “Gorch Fock”), Sedov or Statsraad Lehmkuhl, and smaller sailing vessels. This is how I imagine the atmosphere of harbours in the past, when tall ships still formed the backbone of international trade. Many of the ships were open to visitors, and the city centre was buzzing with a colourful, international mix of thousands of visitors, crew members, sailors and locals.

The sailing ship “Towarischtsch” (“Comrade”) is moored in the port of Bergen during the Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Race 1993, flying the Ukrainian flag at the time, and was open to visitors. The ship was built in Germany in 1932 as the sail training ship “Gorch Fock” and passed into Russian hands after the war.
