Passau: The City of Three Rivers

The Inn and the old town of Passau, Bavaria, Germany

From the bridge over the Inn, I look east towards the confluence of the Inn and the Danube, joined from the north by the Ilz. This is where the name “City of Three Rivers” comes from for Passau, located in the far east of Lower Bavaria on the Austrian border. Between the Inn and the Danube, on a narrow peninsula, lies the lovely Old Town of Passau with the Jesuit Church of St Michael, impressive patrician houses, the beautiful riverside promenade and the Schaibling Tower. Passau was once an important city in the salt trade, as this was the site of the harbour for ships coming down the Inn.
