Tholos in the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, Delphi

Ruins of the circular temple Tholos in Delphi

The journey back to the heart of the ancient world’s classical history feels like stepping into a time machine: the most famous oracle made Delphi one of the most influential places around 500 BC, with its origins dating back as far as 2000 BC. The Sanctuary of Athena, with its well-known marble circular temple, the Tholos, as well as the treasuries along the Sacred Way in the Sanctuary of Apollo, are impressive remnants of Delphi’s heyday, when world politics were shaped from this place in Greece. Thanks to the location of the temples beneath the slopes of Mount Parnassus and above extensive olive groves, whose silvery-shimmering canopy covers the valleys, Delphi also holds a special charm for hikers and lovers of wild, romantic landscapes.
